Mumbai, June 23, 2025 – A massive fire broke out early this morning on the sets of the popular Hindi television show “Anupamaa” at Film City in Goregaon, Mumbai. The blaze, which reportedly started around 5:00 AM, completely destroyed the set, just two hours before the day’s shoot was scheduled to begin.
Fortunately, no casualties or injuries have been reported, as the incident occurred before most of the cast and crew had arrived. However, several employees and crew members who were present for pre-production preparations were safely evacuated.
The fire, which was declared a Level-I emergency by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) Mumbai Fire Brigade at 6:26 AM, originated in a tent structure on the set, according to preliminary reports. Four fire engines and as many jumbo water tankers were deployed to the scene, and the blaze was eventually brought under control by 10:15 AM. The fire was confined to electric wiring, installations, plastic materials, iron materials, decorative materials, cameras, costumes, lighting systems, and studio equipment across a 5,000 sq ft area of the “Anupamaa” studio.
Following the incident, the All Indian Cine Workers Association (AICWA) released a strong statement criticizing the makers for alleged negligence and demanding a thorough, high-level investigation. AICWA President Suresh Shyamlal Gupta has called for the immediate suspension of the Managing Director of Film City and the Labour Commissioner of Mumbai, alleging collusion and willful negligence in enforcing mandatory fire safety protocols. The association has also called for a criminal FIR to be filed against the producers, the production house, the television channel, and the Film City Managing Director and Labour Commissioner. Furthermore, AICWA has urged that the investigation explore the possibility of the fire being deliberately set for insurance claims, and has called for a comprehensive fire safety assessment of all movie sets and studios in Maharashtra, with a ban on any entities found violating safety regulations.

While the exact cause of the fire is still under investigation, preliminary suggestions point towards a short circuit. The incident has raised significant concerns about fire safety measures on production sets, with AICWA claiming that safety norms have been flouted on the “Anupamaa” set for a long time.
The popular show, starring Rupali Ganguly in the lead role, is currently undergoing significant damage assessment, and the incident is expected to impact its upcoming shooting schedule. Neither the channel nor the production team has released an official statement yet regarding the future course of action. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the critical importance of stringent safety protocols in the entertainment industry.
