Four Hands Two Sonatas Premieres: Song Kang, Lee Jun Young, and Jang Gyu Ri Harmonize in Youth Music Drama
tvN’s upcoming weekend drama Four Hands Two Sonatas held an online press conference featuring director Park Hyun Suk along with main leads Song Kang, Lee Jun Young, and Jang Gyu Ri. Due to Lee Jun Youngâs enlistment in the active military on July 21, the event was pre-recorded.
Spanning 12 episodes, Four Hands Two Sonatas follows the friendship, romance, rivalry, and growth of youth at a prestigious arts high school for musical prodigies. The series marks Song Kangâs highly anticipated return to television following his military discharge last October, as well as Lee Jun Youngâs final lead project recorded prior to his enlistment.
A Musical Journey of Healing and Youth
Director Park Hyun Suk, known for his work on Stranger 2, Hometown, and Uncontrollably Fond, expressed high confidence in combining classical music with a youth coming-of-age story.
Director Park Hyun Suk: “While there have been music dramas before, I don’t think there has been one that encompasses classical music and youth growth quite like this. The English term ‘Four Hands’ refers to two people playing a single piano together. It aligns directly with our themeâdepicting two friends completing their musical journey together.”
The narrative centers on Kang Bio (Song Kang), an elite pianist who meets Choi Jung Yo (Lee Jun Young), a former prodigy returning to the piano after a long hiatus. Through playing four-hands piano pieces, the duo gradually overcome their inner wounds and form a deep bond.
Joining them is Jang Gyu Ri as Hong Jae In, a sharp violist who recognizes their genius talent before anyone else.
Character Dynamics & Musician Transformations
Each cast member dedicated months of grueling practice to realistically portray high school prodigies.
- Song Kang (as Kang Bio): Plays a top student who practices 10 hours a day to earn his grandfather’s affection despite winning global competitions. To prepare, Song Kang took intensive piano lessons for months and studied instructor videos between shoots.
- Lee Jun Young (as Choi Jung Yo): Plays a transfer student who stopped playing piano due to past trauma before meeting Bio. Lee Jun Young memorized full classical pieces from scratch, coordinating key movement counts directly with Director Park.
- Jang Gyu Ri (as Hong Jae In): Plays a lively violist. Despite having played the violin as a child, she noted that learning viola sheet music and natural body movement required continuous video feedback with her instructor.
Behind-the-Scenes Chemistry and Piano Bench Stories
During the conference, the actors shared warm anecdotes from the set, highlighting their instant chemistry during script readings and complex musical shoots.
Song Kang: “Since two people have to sit on one piano bench for four-hands scenes, it was cozy during the cold winter, but honestly a bit cramped! Lee Jun Young has a really broad physique.”
Lee Jun Young: “It really was uncomfortable! Song Kang works out super hard, and on days we shot together, heâd come in with his shoulders completely pumped up from working out right before!”

The drama tracks the characters across two distinct timelines, following their journeys at ages 17 and 27 as they navigate competition, personal deficiencies, and mutual growth.
