Kanwar Dhillon on Success, Failure, and Carrying Forward Deep Dhillon’s Legacy

Kanwar Dhillon has steadily carved out his place in television, currently shining as the male lead in Udne Ki Aasha. Yet his outlook on success and failure is refreshingly grounded. He doesn’t allow either to define him, a perspective shaped not only by his own journey but also by the remarkable career of his father, veteran actor Deep Dhillon.

Deep Dhillon was one of Hindi cinema’s most recognizable villains during the 1980s, a face audiences loved to hate. But despite his talent, Kanwar recalls how his father never quite received the recognition he deserved. “I saw my dad not getting his due even though he deserved much more,” Kanwar reflects. “From the time he entered the industry, there was a lot of groupism, and he never really played that game. Even today, he doesn’t socialize much. In fact, I was quite like him when I started out. But I soon realized my time was different, and I needed to do things that my dad didn’t.”

Watching his father’s career unfold gave Kanwar a realistic view of the industry. Deep Dhillon was often bracketed into villainous roles, a common fate for actors who excel in negative characters. After Hulchul (2004), he grew disillusioned with the offers coming his way and chose to transition fully into Punjabi cinema. That move brought him immense respect and fulfillment. “That turban brought him immense respect and love, something I feel he didn’t receive at the same level in Hindi cinema,” Kanwar says, noting how his father found a new sense of belonging in his homeland.

For Kanwar, success is not about fleeting milestones or visibility. It is about continuity, legacy, and the ability to make his family proud. “I feel I am living my journey through my father’s vision,” he explains. “If I am where I am today, it’s almost as if he is living that journey through me. He has often said that I am living the dreams he could not fulfill, and hearing that means everything to me. For me, that is the biggest award.”

His words reveal a deep sense of gratitude and responsibility. Kanwar sees his career not just as personal achievement but as a way of honoring his father’s sacrifices. That perspective keeps him grounded in an industry where fame can be fleeting and competition relentless.

He also emphasizes the importance of growth. “He has seen my transition and growth as an artiste, and that matters deeply,” Kanwar says. “In any profession, being able to make your parents proud is what truly counts. Everything else comes later, and that is what stays with you.”

This philosophy has shaped Kanwar’s approach to both success and failure. He takes them in stride, refusing to let either define him. That resilience is evident in his performances, where he brings authenticity and depth to every role. As he continues to evolve as an actor, his journey reflects not just ambition but also a commitment to carrying forward the values instilled by his father.

Kanwar Dhillon’s story is ultimately one of legacy and perspective. By learning from Deep Dhillon’s experiences, he has cultivated a balanced outlook that keeps him focused on what truly matters. His rise in television is not just about personal milestones but about fulfilling dreams across generations. And as audiences watch him grow, they are also witnessing the continuation of a vision that began decades ago with his father — a vision rooted in resilience, respect, and the enduring bond between parent and child.
