Mysterious Lotus Casebook Director Takes Over Zhang Linghe’s Revenge Drama
Tencent’s highly anticipated costume drama Revenge (刺棠), starring Zhang Linghe and Lu Yuxiao, is moving forward with filming set to start in mid-September.
The project, adapted from Wu Yuan’s novel of the same name and produced by Qi Shuai (A Dream Within A Dream), has undergone an important change behind the camera.
Guo Hu — the acclaimed director of Mysterious Lotus Casebook (莲花楼) — has taken over as director.
This marks a clear shift from the original plan. Earlier reports linked the project to Yi Jun (director of Zhang Linghe’s recent drama Overdo / 这一秒过火). Following mixed audience feedback on the directing and overall execution of Overdo, the production opted for a change, bringing in Guo Hu for his proven track record with tightly crafted period stories, strong visual style, and emotionally layered storytelling.
With Guo Hu now at the helm, expectations for Revenge — a tale of betrayal, dual identities, and fierce rekindled love — have risen even higher. The combination of two rising leads and a director known for elevating both action and emotion makes this one of the more promising costume projects of the year.
Filming begins soon. All eyes are on this one.
