Netflix has officially unveiled the chilling first look at its highly anticipated dark fantasy mystery series, The East Palace (originally titled Donggung). The newly released production stills showcase a brilliant, star-studded acting ensemble operating within a beautiful yet deeply sinister royal court, instantly amping up the hype for a massive summer release.
Scheduled to drop globally on July 17, the series promises a boundary-pushing narrative that seamlessly shifts between the mortal world and a terrifying spiritual realm.
The Plot: A Haunted Palace and an Unlikely Trio
The East Palace follows the gripping story of Gu-cheon (played by Nam Joo-hyuk), a fierce warrior with the rare ability to cross over into the realm of ghosts, and Saeng-gang (played by Roh Yoon-seo), a mysterious court lady harboring deep secrets.
When a malicious curse grips the royal residence, the ruthless King (played by Cho Seung-woo) summons the duo to the heart of the palace to unearth the truth and eradicate the spirits.
Still Breakdowns: Desperate Kings and Bloody Realms
The newly released images offer a glimpse into the tense dynamics and eerie atmosphere that dominate the series:
- The Ruthless King’s Vulnerability: One of the most striking stills features the King holding his young son, Youngan-gun (played by Cho Dan). A fleeting moment of pure desperation and terror flashes across his face. Yet, in the very next frame, he exudes a freezing, intimidating aura as he forces Gu-cheon to his knees. Despite completely despising and denying the existence of ghosts, the King’s decision to recruit a renowned “ghost hunter” hints at a massive, hidden threat.
- The Cursed Deep End: Tasked with stopping the curse, Gu-cheon and Saeng-gang venture into the darkest corners of the palace. Images show Gu-cheon walking into a murky pond with a rope tied tightly around his neck, while Saeng-gang stands guard on land, fiercely drawing back a bowstring.
- The Ghost Realm Unleashed: Fans are treated to a sneak peek of the “Spiritual Realm.” Surrounded by an ominous red energy and a terrifying atmosphere, Nam Joo-hyuk’s sharp, ferocious gaze completely transforms him from his usual roles, raising the tension to a peak.
- The Unseen Horror: Saeng-gang, who possesses the unique ability to hear ghosts, is captured focusing intently on a sound no one else can perceive. Meanwhile, black, parasitic vines are seen slowly constricting the King’s royal bedchamber, signaling the official beginning of a catastrophic supernatural takeover.
When and Where to Watch
With its top-tier cast, breathtakingly dark cinematography, and a refreshing blend of historical drama and occult horror, The East Palace is already shaping up to be Netflix’s next global K-content sensation.
Mark your calendars: All episodes of The East Palace will premiere exclusively on Netflix on Friday, July 17.
