IU and Park Bo Gum are set to captivate audiences with their new Netflix drama *When Life Gives You Tangerines*, which has just released its first still along with intriguing details about its unconventional release schedule!
This upcoming series will follow the vibrant life stories of Ae Sun, played by IU, and Gwan Sik, portrayed by Park Bo Gum, as they navigate the enchanting seasons of Jeju Island. Ae Sun is characterized as bold and rebellious, while Gwan Sik is depicted as a quiet yet dependable figure.
Written by acclaimed screenwriter Lim Sang Chun, known for hits such as *Fight My Way* and *When the Camellia Blooms*, and directed by Kim Won Seok, who has helmed successful projects like *Misaeng (Incomplete Life)* and *Signal*, this drama promises to deliver a compelling narrative.
Netflix officially announced that *When Life Gives You Tangerines* will premiere on March 7 and unfold over four weeks, structured in an innovative format: each of the series’ 16 episodes will be released in weekly four-episode batches every Friday, from March 7 to March 28.
Bae Jong Byung, Netflix’s Senior Director, explained this decision: “Given the story’s unique structure divided into four acts, we collaborated with the creators to find the best way to present the narrative to our audience. Releasing four episodes each week over four weeks will allow viewers to fully engage with and appreciate the story’s intent.”
Alongside the announcement, Netflix revealed the drama’s first still, hinting at the dynamic between Ae Sun and Gwan Sik. In the image, Ae Sun appears pensive in her school uniform, while Gwan Sik quietly observes her. Their contrasting yet harmonious energies—Ae Sun’s fiery determination paired with Gwan Sik’s steadfast presence—hint at the intriguing journey ahead.
Director Kim Won Seok shared insights into the essence of the drama, stating, “It tells the story of a girl who dreams without limits but faces numerous challenges stemming from poverty, her upbringing on the island, and societal expectations. Nevertheless, she continually rises to the occasion. Gwan Sik is portrayed as a dependable man who would go to great lengths for Ae Sun. Their adventure—together or apart—captures the essence of life.”
Expectations are high for the chemistry between IU and Park Bo Gum, with Director Kim noting, “I believe this pairing will be incredibly entertaining and mesmerizing. Park Bo Gum will reveal facets of himself that audiences haven’t seen before, while IU will showcase even more of the charms we’ve come to love from her previous works.”
Bae Jong Byung added, “After watching them together, viewers will wonder, ‘Why didn’t they collaborate sooner?’”
