Phantom Lawyer: A Supernatural Legal Drama Blending Comedy and Emotion
SBS is set to unveil its latest Friday-Saturday drama Phantom Lawyer, a series that promises to deliver a refreshing mix of supernatural intrigue, heartfelt storytelling, and comedic flair. The drama, directed by Shin Jung Hoon in his debut project, stars Yoo Yeon Seok, Esom, and Kim Kyung Nam in leading roles.
At its core, Phantom Lawyer tells the story of Shin I Rang (played by Yoo Yeon Seok), a kind-hearted attorney who unexpectedly gains the ability to see spirits after opening his law office in what was once a shaman’s house. His mission becomes helping restless souls resolve their lingering grudges, offering viewers a unique blend of legal drama and spiritual adventure. Alongside him is Han Na Hyun (Esom), a cold and calculating elite lawyer from a prestigious firm who is obsessed with winning cases. Their contrasting personalities set the stage for a dynamic partnership that evolves into a warm, comedic journey of self-discovery and compassion.
Yoo Yeon Seok, known for his many doctor roles, takes on the challenge of portraying a lawyer for the first time. He emphasized the novelty of the role, noting that while he prepared diligently for the legal aspects, the true heart of the series lies in his character’s ability to embody different spirits each episode. This “possession acting” allows him to showcase a wide range of performances, from humorous to deeply emotional. One highlight revealed during the press conference was Yoo’s transformation into a high school idol ghost, complete with a dance performance to IVE’s “Love Dive.” He trained for months to perfect the choreography, even receiving feedback directly from the group, underscoring his dedication to the role.
Esom described her character Han Na Hyun as a rational, victory-driven lawyer who gradually discovers her authentic self through her encounters with Shin I Rang. Her sharp, competitive nature contrasts with Yoo’s warm-hearted portrayal, creating tension and chemistry that is expected to captivate audiences.
Director Shin Jung Hoon acknowledged the pressure of following a previous drama with modest ratings, but expressed confidence in Phantom Lawyer. He highlighted the series’ approachable tone, describing it as a “human comedy adventure” that can be enjoyed by viewers of all ages. His vision is to create a drama that balances laughter, emotion, and supernatural mystery, making it both entertaining and relatable.
The production team and cast are optimistic that Phantom Lawyer will resonate with audiences by offering something distinct from traditional courtroom dramas. With its mix of ghostly encounters, comedic elements, and heartfelt resolutions, the series aims to stand out as a fresh addition to SBS’s lineup.
Phantom Lawyer premieres on March 13 at 9:50 PM on SBS, inviting viewers into a world where the law meets the afterlife, and where justice is served not only for the living but also for the departed.
