“The Road to Splendor” Trailer Is Here — and It’s Pure Fated-Enemies-to-Lovers Chaos
Two days before its August 9 premiere, WeTV dropped the full trailer for The Road to Splendor (花开锦绣), the new Ming Dynasty period drama starring Ding Yuxi and Ancy Deng (Deng Enxi). And based on what’s packed into it, this one’s shaping up to be a fugitive road-trip romance with real teeth — equal parts court intrigue, survival drama, and slow-burn devotion.
The Setup: A Fallen Noblewoman and a Blade-Wielding Salt Dealer
The trailer wastes no time establishing its stakes. It opens on a chilling voiceover: “The Fu family owes me ten thousand taels for salt.” The very next shot is Zhao Ling (Ding Yuxi) holding a knife to Fu Tingyun’s (Ancy Deng) throat — not exactly a meet-cute.
We quickly learn why. Fu Tingyun was born into privilege as a noblewoman, but she’s been maliciously framed, stripped of her reputation overnight, and cast out by her own family. A cold line from another character sums up just how far she’s fallen: “Their family is in decline. They can only rely on a chastity arch for their political career.” From there, the trailer shows her being forced into a marriage she never chose — even being made to drink from a cup in a moment of visible despair.
That’s when Zhao Ling reenters the picture. On the surface, he’s just an underground salt dealer. Underneath, he’s a man carrying his own long-buried family case. Watching Fu Tingyun at her lowest, he makes her an offer that sounds more like a dare: “You no longer have any value for them to exploit,” he tells her, “but I do have a way though — dare to step into a bridal sedan?”
An Unlikely Pact, and a Journey That Builds Real Trust

That’s the deal the two of them strike — a fallen noblewoman and a scrappy salt dealer, posing as a married couple and fleeing together across the land. It’s a premise built for chemistry: two people who start out as strangers (or worse, adversaries) forced into forged intimacy, with a journey that slowly turns performance into genuine trust.
The trailer leans into this dynamic hard, cutting between tense standoffs and quieter moments that suggest their bond deepens the longer they’re on the run — from family threats on one side to court dangers on the other.
Zhao Ling’s Ambition Takes Center Stage
Beyond the romance, the trailer makes a clear statement about who Zhao Ling is as a character. He’s framed as a man with no roots — “like a blade of grass” — who’s determined to claw his way upward no matter the cost. It’s a classic self-made-man arc, and the trailer closes on it directly, with Zhao Ling declaring in voiceover: “If there is a path that leads to the top in this world, no matter how perilous it is, I will walk it.” The final shots back that line up with images of him refusing to be stopped by anything in his way.
It’s a strong closing beat — less “will they/won’t they” and more “watch this man fight his way to the top, with her at his side.”
The Bigger Picture

The Road to Splendor is adapted from the novel of the same name by author Zhi Zhi, directed by Deng Ke, and written by Nan Zhen. Set in the Ming Dynasty, it blends a fugitive road-trip narrative with family power struggles and court politics — a mix that tracks with everything the trailer teases. The series runs 36 episodes and premieres exclusively on WeTV on August 9, 2026.
If the trailer is anything to go by, expect a drama that moves fast: forced proximity, political danger, a hero with something to prove, and a heroine who’s rebuilding herself from nothing — all wrapped in classic costume-drama scale.
